Tips for decorating your chipboard books

Here are a few tips to help with decorating the chipboard books from Kits 1 &2:

  • The pages tend to not be exactly the same size, instead of trying to use a template to cut paper for each page, we recommend just gluing paper down on each page & then cutting around the edges of the chipboard pages
  • If you want to color the edges of the book, we recommend that you paint or ink the edges before covering with paper. Also, be careful when painting because the pages can stick together when the paint dries.
  • Cover all pages with paper first and then return and add embellishments. (If you load up the album with embellishments as you go, the pages tend to open less and less, making it harder to work with the last few pages.
  • Finish the cover last - if you do it first, it tends to get worn as you work through the rest of the album.
  • We recommend covering the spine as a separate piece - cover the front, back & spine (separately). If you try to cover it as one piece there would be potential problems with it opening the album.

  • Stamp on them using Staz-on to create a transparent design
  • Paint on the back to add some color
  • Cut frame to use as large photo corners
  • Highlight journaling or a quote on your page
  • Tie with ribbon, staple, add brads, etc. to decorate
  • Write on them with gel pens or Sharpies
  • Stitch on them (by hand or with sewing machine)
  • Use Rubons on them

Printing Multi-Photo Digital Pictures by Patty

Look at my albums, and you’re going to see lots of multi-photo layouts.  Look at my life, and you’ll see I’m a thrifty kind of gal.  Years ago, I figured out a way to combine these traits by reducing the size of my pictures in order to fit two or more on each 4x6 print.  I get more pictures for less money!  I use this method whether I send off my digital pictures for printing or if I print them at home.

The hardest part for me is figuring out the orientation and size of the pictures when combining them into a single 4x6 template.  Even this isn’t difficult; it just takes a little “thinking it through.”

In this example, each of these pictures originally was a 4x6 horizontal image.  Each one is now a 3x4 picture placed in a vertical 4x6 image.  Trust me; it gets easier when you can first “picture” the final photo image!

Here are the steps I followed for these fun pictures of my son.  Some of them are very similar to what you do when scanning and “stitching” a 12x12 layout.  I used Photo Shop Elements 3, but any photo imaging software should work.

1. Open up the 1st picture.

2. Reduce the image size to 3” high by 4” wide and increase the pixels to 300 dpi.

3. Adjust under the View tab to “fit on screen.”

4. Save the new picture under a new name.

5. Repeat steps 1-4 with the 2nd picture.

6. Open up a new image that is 6” high by 4” wide and 300 dpi.

7. Go to 1st picture.  Select all (control key and “A” at same time) then copy (control key and “C” at same time).

8. Open up new image.  Paste 1st picture into this new canvas (control key and “V” at same time).

9. Use the editing controls to move the picture into one half of the new canvas.  For me, this is done by choosing the arrow tool (the first icon in my list of tool icons).  Then I simply click on the picture to drag it into position.  You can also use the up and down arrows for this.

10. Repeat steps 7-9 with 2nd picture.

11. Under the Layers tab, choose “flatten image.”

12. Save under a new name and it’s ready to print

In these pictures of my daughter, I had to first rotate the picture on the right.  Then, I reduced each one to 4” high by 3” wide.

With the layout (shown below), I reduced the pictures even more and was able to fit 6 into one 4x6 image.  Each picture is a 2” square.

As I have become a better photographer, I have less and less “junk” to crop out on the sides of my pictures.

Yet, there’s no practical way to include all those great 4x6 shots into my photo albums.  By printing them out in smaller images, I’m still getting the impact of the great pictures, but I am able to fit many more of them in each layout.

This technique also works great when you do have to crop out around the focal point.  Simply crop the picture first, using your photo imaging software and then reduce the size, copy, and paste, following the directions above.

Have fun editing and printing your pictures using these tips.  Once you try it with a layout, be sure to upload the page into The Scrapbook Site gallery for all of us to see!
